I don't have a solid opinion on that, and I can see good arguments going either way. Similar music might be a safer choice, in that it has a better chance of appealing more to the core audience of the main band. But then they might not be so hungry for the main act to begin. If it's a very different kind of music, the contrast can help to offset or highlight the distinctive style of the main band, and the diversity of musical styles could keep some fans more engaged with what's going on. All that being said, it's also true that Jack White's musical palette is pretty broad, so he can easily provide his own diversity and contrast; and it's hard to imagine any other band being all that similar to him anyway.

Oh, and bands that should open for Jack White: Maybe Foo Fighters or Black Keys. Or, heck - maybe Radiohead or the Rolling Stones.

I like the opening band to contrast greatly from the main act. For instance I saw Lucinda Williams at the Ryman and the Heartless Bastards (the old band) opened for her. That's how I discovered the H.B.'s and now I have all their albums.

i think the black motorcycle rebellion would be a great opener for jack now that i hear the lay out of the blunderbuss landscape

they have this way of being understated but not out of reach for getting the crowd worked up

THE MARS VOLTA! or ... jack should OPEN for the mars volta! or better yet, both have headlining, hour and half or 2 hour sets. that would be fucking epic ass show! i would die happy if that happened

but in all seriousness,
if WE ARE HEX were still together, would be a great opening band
Marriages
Russian Circles, would be a badass show

or no openers
how do you guys feel about a band not having an opening act? just them and that's it

i wish more bands would do this. not that i don't like seeing an opening band. hell sometimes i'm damn glad i saw a band i wasn't too familiar with, or didn't even know existed. but there's times when i go to a show and just wish there was no one else playing but the band i'm there to see. maybe their set can be longer if that was the case.
the mars volta do that. they never have an opening band. which i think is pretty awesome. it's just them doing what they do best

yep.// BRMC... you got it right

but when it comes to Russian Circles opening for jack i think they might not want a short set which gives no time for the sort of dramatically intensified show they intend to put their audience through... they are more of a feature length film kind of presentation
