Evangelist Records
http://www.evangelistrecords.com/
This label released their first 45s/78s (78s limited to 300 - collectors rejoice!) a while back, including Pokey LaFarge and I'm surprised I haven't heard more talk about it. I think that Pokey 45 is the best sounding single I've bought all year. It sounds old, like it was rescued from deep within an archive somewhere. They seem to be using some properly ancient equipment to record stuff and it really is something special...you guys should check it out.

Re: Evangelist Records
The local shop here has several copies of the Pokey 7" and 78 if anyone is interested in either of them.

Re: Evangelist Records
Did you get the Pokey 45 or the Pokey 78? I got the 78 (received it just the other day, in fact) and that was exactly what I thought of it-- That it sounds like I always imagined a 78rpm record should sound.grumblestiltskin wrote:I think that Pokey 45 is the best sounding single I've bought all year. Ordered the 78s myself. Don't know if it's true with these -- and someone else here will know more about it -- but I think older 78s ideally use a different needle than 33s/45s. Grooves are wider on 78s. Uber-geeky (and interesting) info here. http://www.videointerchange.com/vintage_78s.htm

Will be interesting to hear how these sound on my ProJect Xpression with the 78 rpm kit and 78 stylus...

Howdy!
Joe here from Evangelist HQ. Cathy was kind enough to direct me over this way. Thanks for the interest in our records.
Firstly, the 78 is playable on modern stylus's, but it will also work on a proper 78 one. Just dont try it on your gramaphone! It would play but as they don't make shellac anymore it would wreck the vinyl!
We master all of our own records as well as record them. You can read more about the process here..

My partner Lewis is also in a great band called Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. You should check them out if you have a second. They were supposed to do a Third Man single but couldn't find the time currently.
An interesting fact about our Pokey record is that is was recorded nearly a year before he did his Third Man single. I have known Pokey for ages and am really proud and excited of all the success he has had.
You should also check out our other two releases. CW Stoneking is another artist slated for a Third Man release. He does a great sort of old time calypso blues.
Also Blind Boy Paxton, our first release, is a stunning blues man.
To thank you for your post here I'll let you check out the whole lot of the releases.

Ah, Joe, very cool of you to pop in! It's always great to hear from record label folks and get "inside scoop". Someone else told me the other day that I needed to pick up your CW Stoneking release, as well as check out Lewis' band. Gonna send you some more of my money real soon, thank you for the good stuff you're gonna send in return.

All the releases so far have been excellent.
Some of the few quality things that were released on RSD
but weren't re-issues
Go buy them
