I don't have one, so I haven't tried it; but glycerin might be a good filler.

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-glycerin.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycerol
http://science.howstuffworks.com/dictio ... n-info.htm

Perhaps a solution of glycerin in isopropyl alcohol (methanol), so it's not too viscous. (And with food coloring added as desired.) Glycerin will be less likely to leak than water; it's antiseptic so it's less likely to grow the kind of microorganisms that thrive in water; and it's more temperature stable than water, too. It's often used as a liquid fill for toys, gauges, kaleidoscope cells and other things.(Sometimes in liquid-filled compasses too; although mineral oil is more common there.)

Try to make sure that whatever fill liquid you use is unlikely to dissolve vinyl acetate, of course. I doubt that glycerin would do that, since it's a common ingredient in shampoos and other liquids that are stored in plastic bottles. If you do mix it with methanol, make sure there are no leaks, or else the alcohol will evaporate.

This faq on liquids used to fill gauges suggests either glycerin or silicone oil:
http://www.wika.us/service_FAQ_en_us.WIKA#PM_1
But silicone oil can be expensive, messy, and hard to remove from plastic; and the food coloring would probably not dissolve in it either.

Glycerin would probably be a better bet; diluted with either methanol or water to lower the viscosity. Previously in the 16 Saltines thread I had mentioned glycerin as a possible fill liquid: http://www.whiteswirl.com/forum/viewtop ... 30#p109423

Add:
Propylene glycol might be another possibility:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol
http://www.propyleneglycol.org/

There's also mineral oil, but it's toxic if ingested and it would be messy if it leaked. It also dissolves some plastics, not sure about vinyl.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_oil
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-mineral-oil.htm

Off-topic / Pretty cool DIY kit for a liquid-submerged PC, in mineral oil:
http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php

I think those are the four main clear liquids that are used for liquid fillers:
glycerin, propylene glycol, mineral oil, and silicone oil.

(There's also ethylene glycol, but it's highly toxic. Used in antifreeze.)

I think Ben told someone it was water and blue food dye.

Yes, I recall that. I wasn't saying what the fill liquid is, but rather suggesting what it perhaps should be.
All kinds of stuff can grow in water, and then it can flocculate into unsightly little lumps. And water leaks more easily than glycerin. And etc. There are good reasons why water is almost never used as a liquid filler for any commercial product. (That is, anything that is sealed, and the liquid is intended to remain there permanently.) But if someone really wants to use water to refill it, let me suggest distilled water; at least that way it won't leave visible mineral deposits inside the vinyl if the water leaks and/or evaporates.

that sucks. how was it packaged? i'm listing mine on ebay tonight. i decided i would wrap the actual record in saran wrap, and insert it into a regular LP sleeve, then ship the plastic sleeve outside of it. i know those picture disc sleeves always tear too. that's awesome that they're refunding you though.

krazy glue all around the edges works perfectly...you can actually watch it fill in the blank space between the 2 pieces of clear vinyl. sent mine all the way across the pond with zero issues. i would strongly suggest that to people that intend on keeping them leak free for a long time.

Great advice. And don't forget to sure up the post hole and perhaps the plug as well. I credit Coldsoup's steady hands with keeping our LFRs dry during shipping from Nashville.

This one wasn't packed well, so I blame it on that. Tis one was inside the tmr vault singles gatefold and inside a lp mailer. That was stuck inside a bigger box with zero packing material. It was scary non the less when I opened everything. Just ordered another from a bigger seller on the board so it should arrive trouble free :)

Ok, 2nd go around went a little bit better. Package job was amazing, good price as well. Only issue is the center plug leaked a little on the label during shipping(side A only). But other than that its ready to play once and frame :) Going to super glue around the center hole, clean off some of the excess glue from URP with goo gone as well.

very nice,

ok i know for sure mine is losing liquid now. don't know how the hell this happening, or where it is going. but from the last time i thought it was leaking i marked the level, now it's a bit lower. hell, the liquid doesn't even hit the label when standing vertically any more. it's right under it.
has anyone tried refilling this bad boy?

+1

Mine is losing liquid as well. No leaks anywhere, nor is it running through blank spots in the glue strip. I keep it pretty cool thinking it would limit any evaporation. Would also like to know what has been used to refill it.
