Pressing Issues

Post by jerrytimes »

Has anyone lately noticed a decline in the quality of the records lately? Ex, White Stripes 45's Vault package. One of the 45's is warped, my Olivia Jean LP, has a warp (doesn't affect play but the tone arm does jump) and the record was pressed off center. A few newer 45's are pressed off center as well. Am I just picky?

Kinda makes me anxious for the new Third Man pressing plant to open.

This is a new issue...?

Didn't someone notice the OG tri-colors are thicker than the newer ones?

Pretty sure that was me but I can't find the post. I think it started with the Michael Kiwanuka and Frank Fairfield tris at SXSW. If I remember correctly they were the first thin 7" from TMR.

Two copies of my Soldedad Brother LP, Dead Weather Vault, and Vault Lazaretto (2 of them) have sides pressed off-center.

That was me! Let me go weigh the new Courtney Barnett tri and black version and compare. It seemed like the black 45 was pretty substantial.

5678s black - 40g
5678s tri - 38g
Courtney Barnett black - 40g
Courtney Barnett tri - 42

Results: inconclusive.

Then I used a digital caliper to do some measurements.
