Any Dinosaur Jr. fans in swirlville? Curious if anyone has any recommendations for albums to start with?

I'm a fan of Where You Been and Without A Sound. That's where I'd recommend one starts.

if possible, I'd check out the first six albums at the very least, and in order of release

Love em. Green Mind, Where you Been & Without a sound are my 3 favs. But I'd suggest Ear Bleeding Country if you want the best of.

Highly recommend J. Mascis - Martin & Me

Also liked both J Masic + the Fog albums.

Def go with---without a sound.
The acoustic J Mascis is awesome also.
The album name is escaping me right now.

the best thing about this thread is that you really can't go wrong with any of their releases, lol
they're definitely been one of the most solid bands throughout their career, each album is worth appreciation

I have to agree that the band is solid all the way through. The problem being that the band only existed from albums 1-3 (Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug) and then not again until 8-10 (Beyond, Farm, and I Bet On Sky). In between the band only existed in name as an outlet for J to keep making Dino music. The "solo" material doesn't measure up to the "band", but it is very good regardless. If I were to make a recommendation, it would be to remember that the 1st album is raw and YLAOM is truely where the band takes off. The same formula is continued nicely in Bug. Beyond is great, Farm is incredible, and I Bet On Sky is on par with Beyond. If I were you, I would check out the full band efforts first and then progress to the middle material. Good Luck, you can't go wrong.

Saw them in New Orleans last October. One of the best, and loudest shows I've ever seen.

December 3-8, 2015, Dinosaur Jr. celebrates 30 years since the release of their debut album, “Dinosaur,” with a six-night run of shows at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City. The band will perform their debut album in its entirety each night followed by a set of songs from across their catalog, with very special guests sitting in each night.
