Bon Iver, The Decemberists Record With The Chieftains
Image
I don’t care if your name is Seamus O’Hoolihan and you just ate a whole uncooked potato for breakfast; Justin Vernon and Colin Meloy can now effectively brag about being more Irish than you. That’s because both of them have recorded songs with the Chieftains, the long-running traditional Irish folk band. The Chieftains will celebrate their 50th anniversary as a band, and to celebrate, they’re releasing Voice Of Ages, a new album of collaborations, and both Bon Iver and the Decemberists are on board. It will be very, very interesting to hear how those sound.

Voice Of Ages is out 2/21 on Hear/Concorde. And yes, the thing I said in the first sentence means that Ziggy Marley is also more Irish than you, so maybe don’t take it literally.

The Decemberists will be appearing as special guests, in yellowface, on an upcoming episode of The Simpsons! Program your TiVo! Fire up the DVR! Rotate your Roku! Keelhaul your Apple TV! You heard that right -- The Decemberists on The Simpsons! Because of the thick shroud of secrecy that hovers over every upcoming season of this perennial American favorite television series, we cannot disclose the plot of the episode in which the band appears, seemingly via wormhole, in the world of Springfield -- suffice it to say: it's called "The Day The Earth Stood Cool" and it'll be unleashed December 2nd, at 8 pm ET, on Fox.

Saw the gang play twice in the last week. Did 2 songs at the first gig and 2 more at the second. Colin did 2 new songs solo....I'm guessing studio time this fall and a new album out next year. :D
I got that deep into variants once before with a collection, please shoot me if I go there again, it will drive you crazy I promise...
But nice stuff for sure.

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

Pause a while, here, gentle traveler of the internet. We here at Decemberists HQ have an item of fairly serious consequence to impart.

Colin Meloy, singer and songwriter for the band, is embarking on A SOLO TOUR. It'll be his first in FIVE YEARS, folks.

The tour will bring him to many far-flung environs, from the eastern seaboard to slightly inland and just south a bit. It will vault him across the wide prairies of our great country's midsection. It will eventually lead him to the Pacific coast, but we're not quite ready to announce that part yet.

No doubt he'll be bringing in tow a slew of songs, new and old, familiar and not so familiar. Songs you're dying to witness live; songs you'd sort of forgotten about and to which you're not exactly opposed to listening. Also in tow? A brand new Colin Meloy Sings… cover EP, which he's been doing since forever, or at least since he started doing these solo tours. He's paid tribute to Morrissey, Shirley Collins and Sam Cooke in the past; what will it be this time? Who knows? Does he even know? Possibly not.

But you want dates, don't you. Well, look no further:

Anywho: come say hello! Sing along! It's going to be a cozy campfire-like time. Bring your own skewers.

Yours,

The Decemberists

The whole band played with Colin at Newport this weekend on 2 songs. Sounded tight.

Don't believe the 60's was the golden age of pop. You glorify the past when the future dries up.
