anyway, i never cared for them much, back in the day (as the kids like to say) but they've grown on me with age. i think it was mostly vedder's, i dunno, attitude that rubbed me the wrong way. but, i have a lot of respect for their body of work now. have you seen their performance on that who tribute concert a few years back? their renditions of "can you see the real me" and "love reign o'er me" were show-stealers. seriously blew me away.
My opinion of Pearl Jam is very neutral. Do I hate them? No. Do I love them? No. The last album I own of theirs is 'Vs.', Which I liked. I actually liked both 'Ten' and 'Vs.'. But for some reason I just feel like I've had my Pearl Jam fill with those 2 albums. Never have seem them live which is odd as what I've seen and heard of them live I've enjoyed. Just never had the motivation to to see them and I guess I haven't the friends that have either.
More than anything I guess I could say that I like Pearl Jam for their political and charitable beliefs. From what I've read and heard about them over the years it sounds like they've been in numerous contracts that have gone bad. Record labels, ticket sales, etc.. But they've stood up for what matters most to them, their fans. Rather than ride the wave of capitalism they let their beliefs take hold and stand up for what they believe is right. Haven't they played numerous shows for charity?
Also, didn't they release a line of official live recordings of their shows? I checked into that years ago as I heard a couple versions of their songs that were obviously recorded live on various radio stations. I think that's a very cool thing as I'm a very big fan of live music recordings. I honestly wish there were more bands that adapted to this. What I'd do for an official line of White Stripes live recordings, among many others (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc.). Sure, there are hundreds of audience source live recordings, but it's also nice to have high production recordings from soundboard and great production equipment. Not to mention the official artwork and all of that sort of thing that us collectors eat up.
Seriously, I'm talking out of my ass. These are things I've heard and read over the years. How much is bullshit I haven't the slightest as I don't follow the band that close. But these are the things that would veer me away from claiming the band "sucks".
Speaking of a a band that sucks, I think the majority of you people should be taking your energy over to my thread = "The Official Greenhornes Suck Thread". Now that's a band I cannot understand being rated any more than below average. I've had to suffer through their shows far too many times for too many years. Whether it's been opening for bands or headlining, I have yet to be the slightest bit entertained by these wannabe garage band. And what are they at now, 2 decades of pathetic music? Seriously, what Jack White/Third Man sees in them I have no clue.
Yeah, I'm a PJ fan; but an even bigger fan of Eddie doing his solo thing!

Well you know what it's like
i don't got to tell you
who puts up a fight
walking out of hell now
when you fought piranhas
and you fought the cold
there's nobody with you
and you're all alone
