Tidal Digital Music Service

No comments or discussion? Saw one over in the Vault / Calling New Yorkers thread, but figured it deserved it's own thread. It will be live streamed, wouldn't put it past Jack White to show up and collab with Jay-Z on a track or two.

I agree with artists getting more money from these services but laugh at the thought of it being HD or lossless quality. You could never stream that type of quality and your phones are not capable of playing that quality, so you'll never hear a difference.

Why could you not stream at that quality?
I stream videos at that quality....don't know why it would be any harder to do audio only....

But, hey pay to play streaming music services are doing so good currently why not try and make another one (said sarcastically).

Most phones can play that quality but the problem of data rate is more the central issue. If I only have 2gb of wireless data per month I'd rather waste it posting cat pictures on FB than streaming lossless audio. Then it boils down to streaming via WiFi. If I'm in my own home, sure that's great because I'm the only person on the pipe but in public WiFi you are fighting everyone else using free bandwidth so you are back to lack of data speed. I won't condemn or praise it until I hear more. The curated HD videos is what intrigues me....you gonna compete with YouTube? Or are we talking live videos that we should already be getting through the Vault.....

I've got a ton of lossless albums on my Pono player. They range anywhere between 2gb-5gb for full HD. My data plan is 3gb a month. My point is, this "lossless" they are streaming is not true HD. Those HD videos you stream on YouTube aren't either. You download a 1 hour show in 1080p and it's 1-2gb...I don't think so. Sure it's 1080p resolution but it's not true HD.

I get what they are doing, but people who use YouTube and other streaming services probably don't give a shit about quality. Audiophiles who want good quality music have much better options ..

First, you are conflating the two. The lossless quality is for audio, the HD is for video. Both packages offer HD videos.
Second, HD is defined by the size of the picture, not the quality or bitrate. Just like there is a spectrum of quality for MP3s, there is a spectrum of quality for HD. It may look like shit, but it's still technically High Definition.

The only way to keep videos from being freely available on YouTube is to contact them and prove ownership or copyright. Otherwise, any old Joe can post the same HD video on YouTube and I don't need a subscription to Tidal to view it.

Yeah, I get the thing with resolution. I can make anything 1080p, but it doesn't always have the quality. My whole point is, I don't think the quality is going to be there with a streaming service, especially not enough for people to pay twice the price for it.

Isn't the point of this that the artists are going to be better compensated than they are by Spotify et al? I dunno, I don't stream any of 'em, 'cause I don't have a fancy phone and can rarely listen to music at work. And why stream at home when my good speakers are hooked up to my turntable/receiver, not my computer?

Hasn't even launched and they are already ripping of another artist? Hmmm...

I use Google All Access. I like it. It's $8 a month and I seriously doubt any other service could woo me away.

Oh, Jack. Did you get into this because you truly believe that it's a significantly improved way of getting music out to people, or just because it's your rapper buddy Jay-Z?

Jack's solo stuff and some Racs stuff are on Amazon Prime which I have since it's included in the whole Prime package of services. I'm interested to hear how it works with streaming seeing as how Jack and TMR have relied heavily on iTunes for selling music to date and not really committed face time to a specific streaming service until now. The amount of money in that one room is astounding.... Jack, Bey, Kanye, Madonna.... I'm intrigued. I wonder if that was the hold up with MCHG, waiting for the streaming service to be ready and MCHG on vinyl was a sort of lead up.

^^ The timing cannot be coincidental. There may have been other factors contributing to the delay of this Magna Carta edition, but to have it released a week or so before this big deal? Anyone who claims coincidence would come off as disingenuous. It's too much in TMR's recent m.o.-- Promote the vinyl (for the bedroom), then promote the digital (for the car or wherever you happen to stream). Though with Lazaretto they kept doing it in reverse order.

Jay-Z just purchased the norwegian streaming service WIMP. It's been streaming lossless Flac and Alac files for serveral years, competing with spotify for the norwegian market. He's definitely got the technology to stream in this quality.

^ Since you are from Norway; can you say that it definitely is an equal partner with Spotify on the Norwegian market? (in terms of popularity not quality that it wins :) )

Absolutely. Very popular with customers, a good market share, and a much better business model. Generates a lot more money for the artists too, compared to Spotify. No free model, but one month's free trial period.
Created by Norway's most successfol chain of record stores.
