Third Man Records on NUGS.net

Post by rsimms3 »

August 28th 2019
Third Man Records is tag-teaming with Nugs.net to start sharing the countless live recordings we have sitting in our archives.

What does that mean for you? How about unparalleled access to a wide assortment of concert recordings by such heavy-hitters as the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, Jack White, and the Dead Weather.

There’s tons of other gems to be found on Nugs as well. Pearl Jam, Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, Sonic Youth, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, Dead and Company, Wilco and literally more than you could ever manage to listen to. ’Tis a fun ocean to wade through.

Shows are available to stream, download, or even purchase on CD. Our main goal here has been to make our material available in as high of quality as possible. But if you want it as an MP3 or a WAV or a FLAC, well, we’ll make it available every which way.

We’ve managed to negotiate a super sweet discounted introductory rate for Vault members. What would usually cost $38.97 for three months of access to ALL of the Nugs.net 15,000+ recordings is only $3.33 for Vault members.

We’ll be unveiling new recordings the third Thursday of every month - Third Man Thursdays - so there’s plenty of reason to sign-up and stay tuned.

This is by no means meant as a way to usurp our replace the work we do in the Vault. Our physical, vinyl releases in the Vault will always be our primary focus. But staring down the massive piles of live recordings we’ve spent the past twenty years keeping safe, it seemed clear we would never be able to properly release all of them. But that does not mean they are any less important or not worth listening to. Quite the opposite. We know some people buy vinyl records and never listen to them. We know some folks love downloads. We know some people don’t even know what they want. So the approach here is to just put more out there and hope it helps you fans find your fix.

Additionally, Third Man and Nugs.net are joining forces to live stream this week’s sold out, three-night stand of the Raconteurs at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The shows are August 29-31s, start at 9pm CDT every night and are absolutely FREE to watch on either Nugs.tv, The Raconteurs Youtube or the Raconteurs Facebook channels.

To kick it all off, there’s 12 shows from the archives….all supremely killer, especially a previously unheard/unreleased White Stripes show from the 40 Watt in Athens, GA in 1999. Check em out over at nugs.net/thirdmanrecords

We truly hope you enjoy.

So, I have to say I was disappointed that this months offering was a single show and a show that was previously available as a Vault release. I am spoiled. Just gonna get that out of the way before the slings and arrows. Lots of new fans haven't heard it and don't have the vinyl. I would have been much happier with this and one unreleased show. TMR made it sound like they were going to open the floodgates a bit because of the vast number of shows they had they could share...

By my estimation if they released 1 live show from a previous vault package per month starting next month, they could release shows for the next 17 months without releasing anything "new". This is based on using The White Stripes, Dead Weather, Raconteurs, and Jack White/the Bricks. That's also dependent on the Detroit set of three shows for the White Stripes being split up over three months and the two Japan shows being split over two different months.

I've skimmed past a couple people's posts on Fascenzebook who seem pretty excited about but I'm not sure if they're vault die hards. I was admittedly a bit disgruntled at the announcement when I thought the video originally promised through the vault would instead be an add-on but now that I run an indie label The Vault fees seem pretty reasonable. And I use the Tidal deal which is steal.

In the end I don't have time to be watching variants of shows I attended. Besides, NUGS.net sounds like a porn site on a SNL movie spinoff.

Update: Oh look! This is my 3,800th post! What a loser.

So in essence we're now paying 60 bucks a quarter (in the states) for a record, a do-rag or some such thing, scrap book material and to be privvy to whatever obscure record Mr Blackwell finds in his library.

Though I'm not so hot on missing out, I'm just going to hold at my Vault and Tidal subscriptions. I love the Vault records, DVD's and books and I use Tidal every day. If it isn't released through either of those services, I just don't need to see/hear it.

From Third Man's very own Archivist / Psychedelic Stooge, Ben Blackwell:

I thought these two shows were a nice combo of “something old and something new.” With all the focus on the 20th anniversary of the White Stripes first album (the current Vault package, the “Striped” podcast) it only felt appropriate to highlight one of the premier gigs the band played back in 1999. The Jack White show is just a solid gig, recorded to tape at the TMR Nashville home base that felt TOO good not to share in its entirety.

Jack White Live at Third Man Records 4/19/2014 - While most people would know this show for “Lazaretto” and “Power of My Love” being pressed onto a 7” 45rpm single a mere 3 hours and 55 minutes after its recording and touted “The World’s Fastest Record", it’s easy to forget that a decent-sized set of other songs were also performed that morning. This show may be the earliest Jack White has ever performed a concert? In addition to being the first performance on the “Lazaretto” touring run for JW, it would also be the debut live performances of several classic songs in his catalog…the aforementioned “Lazaretto,” “High Ball Stepper,” “Would You Fight For My Love?” “Just One Drink” and “Three Women.” Featuring contributions from Cory Younts, Ikey Owens, Dominic Davis, Olivia Jean, Fats Kaplin, Scout Pare-Phillips, Daru Jones and Lille Mae Rische, this 12-song set is a perfectly distilled collection of what made the “Lazaretto” world tour so captivating.

The White Stripes Live at the Gold Dollar Vol. III 2/6/1999 - After the Stripes finished the tracking of their first album (taking place just a stone’s throw from the Gold Dollar) in January 1999, they immediately focused attention on a live performance at the Gold Dollar on Saturday February 6th, 1999. As only the Stripes' second-ever headlining show, the gig was notable for the first-ever live performances of songs “Astro”, “Suzy Lee” and the Robert Johnson classic “Stop Breaking Down”…all of which would be featured on their self-titled debut album released just three months later. The transitional nature of the setlist of this performance captures the band as they grapple with the impending release of their new album and the best way to showcase that material prior to its release.

Pretty happy with the releases as of late, especially the "extra" show this month of the Raconteurs at the Ryman. Keep it up TMR with something old and something new. Feel free to add something borrowed and something blue next month for Christmas.... ;)

Going down a rabbit hole here; so, the July 16, 2020 Vault post (https://vault.thirdmanstore.com/news/th ... -on-nugs-5) has rear artwork for the 2000/12/02 Sit & Spin show listing it as TMR-696. It is among the front artwork and a photo of the original cassette J-card. The front artwork on that page is 1388x1388, the rear is 1875x1875 and the J card is 1061x960. Nugs has images of the front artwork and J-card at 450x450, with no rear artwork available on their website.

I e-mailed Nugs and they have stated that the only artwork they provide is a front cover embedded in the metadata of the music. I also e-mailed the TMR Vault and they have stated that the art on the Vault posts and Nugs storefront are all the art.

I purchased the 2000/06/16 Sit & Spin show in FLAC-HD. There is no vault post related to this show. The artwork on the Nugs page is 450x450 (seemingly a standard for them). I extracted the artwork from the metadata and it is indeed 1600x1600 (and it looks much, much better).

I believe there is more (and higher quality) art out there for these releases, but I don't know where.

Here is my attempt at cataloguing what is publicly available and adding as I know more:

Not the only one but maybe the only one related to finding hi-res pics of the covers.... ;) Check the Facebook feeds for each band listed above, I've found hi-res covers in the White Stripes FB feed for the past few releases. Those are typically 960x960. The very last one at Sit and Spin looks horrid on their FB feed, shitty render or conversion in format. But....their Twitter has a good one at 1388x1388 here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EdEAV-xWoAY ... name=large

My best advice is this - use Chrome, find the pic you are looking for covers, right click the image and "search Google for image" to find the best one it has archived.
